Fishing & dark skies · 40 minutes from the ridge
Eleven Mile & Spinney Reservoirs
Forty minutes west, the land flattens into South Park and two big reservoirs, Eleven Mile and Spinney Mountain, hold some of the best trout fishing in the state. This is Gold Medal water, quiet and wide open, and once the sun drops the sky here goes as dark as almost anywhere in Colorado, thick with stars over the water.
What to do
- 01
Fish the Gold Medal waters of Spinney Mountain and the Eleven Mile canyon
- 02
Launch a kayak or paddleboard on the calm reservoir on a still morning
- 03
Stay past dusk for some of the darkest, most star-filled skies in the state
Know before you go
- A Colorado fishing license is required, and Spinney has special Gold Medal regulations. Check current rules.
- There is little shade and real wind out here. Bring sun cover, water, and a warm layer for evening.
- Best for
- Anglers, paddlers, stargazers, anyone chasing quiet water and dark skies
- When to go
- Spring through fall for fishing and paddling; Spinney typically closes in winter.
